Why People Make New Years Resolutions

Octavia Wells, Staff Writer

The New Year is in full swing we are officially in 2022 and with it being the New Year we start hearing the resolutions from family and friends that we know they will be serious about it for two weeks but then just drop it like a kid with a new toy until they get bored, but the question is why do people make these New Year’s resolutions.
People make resolutions at the beginning of the year for their own self improvement and making themselves better from the previous year, like they want to lose weight, they want to quit smoking/drinking or just even better their mental health and all of those are great things to improve on and should be something that people should strive to better themselves.
That’s only if they stick with and not drop it after a couple weeks or a month which is what 8/10 people always do and so the question is why do people make these resolutions in the first place, and why are they so hard to keep?
According to piedmont.org
When people make said resolutions their brain triggers this “neuro-hormone” called dopamine which regulates the brains emotional responses and while when you make the resolution your dopamine levels are high but eventually after awhile they will drop and if your not in the right headspace you’re going to lose focus on your set goal and steer away from it and when you break the goal once its as if all the motivation from the goal disappears.
For everyone we are our own biggest critic and will pin point everything wrong with ourselves that other people don’t even notice, when we do this we develop this sense of self doubt and the feeling that you can’t do it or you’re not good enough to and that is a downfall for New Years resolutions.
So to keep up with it and meet your goal that you had set you can seek help from friends and family and get some encouraging words and advice to keep your mind on the right path, you can set up a reward or gift for yourself for check points on your goal till it is met and you can also give yourself a break and not be so hard on yourself to make sure you meet your goal because this whole goal is about bettering yourself you shouldn’t be beating yourself down to achieve it.
At the end of the day New Year’s resolutions are a fun way to challenge yourself and make yourself better but you should be taken with a grain of salt and not be a life or death thing.
